Kurashi-no-Botanical Garden Special Program "Winter Flower ・ Sasanqua

About 140 varieties of sasanquas that add color to winter are all in one place.

The sasanqua is one of the few plants that originated in Japan and, along with the camellia, adds color to gardens during the wintry season. As part of the special program "Traditional Plants of the Seasons," Kurashino Botanical Garden has been collecting and exhibiting sasanquas, which are representative winter garden plants, since 2001. These include a unique group of varieties called "Edo sasanquas" and "Higo sasanquas.
The sasanquas can be roughly divided into three groups: the "sasanqua group," which is close to the native species; the "camellia group," which is thought to be a seedling of the lion's head or a later generation; and the "harusasanka group," which is thought to be a naturally formed hybrid between sasanquas and camellias or a later generation. The flowers bloom in the above order from mid-October to February of the following year. All of these varieties were selected from seedling varieties, and the way these varieties are maintained ・ and disseminated is a major characteristic of Japanese horticultural culture. The Kurashino Botanical Garden has focused on the relationship between people and sasanquas from the perspective of both genetic resources and cultural assets, and has exhibited the results of its study of both living plants and historical materials.
This exhibition will feature approximately 140 varieties of sasanquas in potted form. This year, under the theme of "Conservation and Succession of Sasanqua," panels will introduce the development and succession of sasanqua varieties and the changes in the form of variety conservation.
