The Shikoku pilgrimage is a circuitous pilgrimage route that encircles the four prefectures of Shikoku, with 88 sacred sites located along the route. The origin of the pilgrimage is attributed to Kobo Daishi Kukai, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and has been believed in and practiced by people for 1,200 years. However, over the long history of the Shikoku pilgrimage, its position and people's involvement with it have changed dramatically. Today, the Shikoku pilgrimage has become known worldwide, and there is a growing movement to register the Shikoku pilgrimage as a World Heritage site.
This exhibition is presented in the following structure, providing an overview of the historical and cultural background of the Shikoku pilgrimage, and exploring the inner workings of its transformation into a cultural resource in modern and contemporary times.
